Brownstones Quarry (SD 681 124)

PDF topos available to download HERE.

BrownstonesWelcome to the experimental Brownstones Bouldering wiki. This will hopefully become a fully interactive video and photo guide to what Lancashire's premiere bouldering area has to offer.

The aim is to provide videos to as many as possible of the problems and try to stay up to date of new problems and eliminates. This could not be done without the boys at South Lancs Bouldering so many thanks to them.

Routes are described right to left to stay in line with the Lancashire Rock guide, which is online at
Lancashire Rock.

Where is Brownstones Quarry?
Where is Brownstones?

Parking is (sensibly) at the side of the road. Be aware some cars travel very quickly along here so be careful. The quarry is found following the path (not the track) down towards the Pond area (see below).
Streetmap.co.uk location.

Bouldering Areas
The bouldering has been split into 8 areas, described right to left:

Satellite Image of Brownstones

01. Pond Area
02. Two Step Area
03. Long Back Wall
04. Groundhog Area
05. Hank's Wall Area
06. Ash Pit Slabs
07. Dezertion Area
08. Obscenity Area and Beyond

Fly Tipping and Nature co-habit: Rabbit Fly Tip
This website in no way condones fly tipping (see below).

The Rules:
Recent chipping (probably not by boulderers) has occurred which is to nobody's benefit.

NO chipping
NO wire brushing. Use a toothbrush or soft nylon brush.
Take your litter (including tape etc) home
NO fly-tipping
Please be sparing with chalk usage and brush any excess off when you go.
Don't investigate the mysterious burning area. There is a perpetual fire which many have gone to investigate but none ever return...... ie. Be courteous to those in nearby houses
Be careful on the road

There are also many rules to the bouldering (you can't use that etc), so if in doubt ask a local. Most of them are approachable.

How do I use this website?
This is an interactive site, so feel free to contribute. All I ask is that you register- it's nice to know who thinks what.

Contribution.
You'll need to register with wetpaint to contribute, but it's very easy. Upload any photos/ videos/ stories/ opinions etc you so desire. Any videos or photos contributed will be credited- either do this yourself or let me know. If there is no credit, the videos are all by GCW and of GCW, as are the photos.

Navigation can be done through the box on the left side of each page:

Home - Brownstones Quarry BoulderingThere are essentially four levels to the site.
Home>Area>Area Info Pages>Routes

The area pages have photo-topos and a route list (which is linked to individual problems) about each area. In the route list, a problem will have [v] before it if there is a video available.

The Area Overview page (eg Pond Area Routes) is for various photos and user comments/ stories etc. Please add your own thoughts.

Routes page will have general information about the route, and eventually all will have videos/ photos etc. Again, your comments are very welcome.

In summary, please explore, contribute and have fun!!!

The Boring Bit
Please remember that all bouldering/ climbing is potentially dangerous. Some of the landings are a bit dodgy without a mat, with some ankle snapping boulders on the ground. Also remember that some of the top outs are loose and/or heather coated. Some heather is strong, some is not.

Be careful and have fun. But if you fall off and break your legs, don't come running to us.

Videos
Many problems now have videos. The four below are compilations of some of the best problems:
